Longevity – Blue Zone

Collier County is on its way to becoming the first county in the state to become a Blue Zone.

In 2004, National Geographic and a leading American writer and explorer, Dan Buettner along with a team conducted a worldwide study to identify where the longest-living people and what it was about their culture and lifestyles that led to lengthy, measurably better lives.

Researchers identified nine characteristics that these areas, called Blue Zones, had in common. They are the Power 9:

1. Move Naturally

2. Purpose (know your sense of purpose)

3. Down Shift (avoid stress)

4. The 80 Percent Rule (stop eating when almost full)

5. Plant Slant (eat a more plant-rich diet)

6. Wine at 5 (drink in moderation)

7. Belong (attend faith-based services weekly)

8. Loved Ones First (family comes first)

9. Right Tribe (establish a social circle that supports healthy behaviors)
